It would be nice if at least one party was based off skill and not how much money you spend. I see a whole lot of people winning just because they use power ups and that’s lame.

  I understand and agree somewhat but the other side to that is if players with lower skill level can't use powerups, then the same person with the highest skills would always dominate the parties and nobody else would have a chance.  This already happens in a lot of the more obscure parties where powerups are fairly useless if you don't know any of the answers.  There are more skills than Knowledge and Speed required for parties.  Intuition for the answers you don't know, Endurance to last or at least monitor for 24hrs and a bank of tickets/powerups are also needed to defend it.  Game is designed that way so all players have chance to compete and the makers can get income from that activity.
